Take Care
During the summer students soak up the sun’s rays and spend much of their time taking part in many summer activities. But even if you don’t plan on being out and about everyday you might consider the following tips for taking care of yourself throughout the summer:
H2O is the way to go, maintaining hydration keeps your body ready to move. The Natura Water company found that 75% of Americans are dehydrated. It is also said that Americans drink on average 2.5 cups of water a day even though 10 cups are the recommended intake amount. It is estimated to take only 45 minutes to rehydrate oneself. The American Heart Association suggests putting in your favorite fruits or vegetables to your water to mix things up.
Apply Sunscreen to avoid sensitive and burnt skin. The Florida Dermatology and Skin Care centers recommend applying sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside. The American Association of Dermatology or the AAD suggests reapplying sunscreen every two hours. Make sure to protect your lips by putting on lip balm SPF 30 or higher as proposed by the AAD. Don’t stay outside too long.
Drive safely, to maintain cooling in your car check the radiator, pressure cap, belts, and hoses. This is what the State Farm Insurance Company advises before travelling in the summer. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that hot weather contributes to the degrading of hoses and belts within the vehicle. If you are planning on taking a trip or long drive during the summer make sure you have a roadside emergency kit. This kit may contain:
- Flashlight
- Emergency flag of sort
- Jumper cables
- Screwdrivers and wrenches
- Spare tire
- Phone
- Water for car patrons and/or car radiator
- First-aid kit
Disconnect, set your phone aside for emergencies. Summer is the time to make memories with friends who you may not have had classes with.
Above all take care of yourself mentally and physically during the summer and throughout the rest of the year. Have a great summer!
