Battle vs Smith Cotton Week 2 Preview
It’s now week two of the high school football. For most teams, they are looking to stay undefeated and get their second win of the season. For other teams it’s an opportunity to bounce back from their week one losses and get their first win. The 0-1 Spartans look to bounce back this week when they travel to Sedelia to play the 0-1 Smith Cotton Tigers.
The Spartans Friday night according to head coach Atiyyah Ellison, “Played until the very end.” Despite that though, the Spartans couldn’t get the big stop that they needed in the final two minutes of the game. The Spartans lost 47-52. Offensively the Spartans were able to make some big touchdowns, including the two touchdown receptions from senior Dawson Meierotto. They also had rushing touchdowns from seniors Harrison Keller and Darren Jordan and a big kickoff return touchdown from sophomore Gerry Marteen. But the Spartans gave up three safeties, and threw a game changing interception in the fourth quarter that cost them late in the game. Defensively the Spartans were able to make some key fourth down stops, an interception by Senior Quentarius Vaughn and a forced fumble, but St. Louis University High’s senior running back Kellen Porter rushed for over 150 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns.
The Tigers are coming off of a 28-35 loss on the road to the Moberly Spartans. The Tigers are very inexperienced as the defense only has two starters on the defensive side of the ball that returned from last year, as well as having six sophomores starting on the defense. The Tigers trailed to the Spartans 14-35 at halftime, but the defense allowed zero points in the second half and made an attempt at a comeback, but they came up just short.
The Spartans and Tigers will kickoff at 7 p.m at Smith Cotton High School.
