Spider-Man is Back
Sony and Marvel breaks deal on new deal to bring Spider-Man back in MCU
Some believe the inevitable has finally happened. Spider-Man is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after 38 days of negotiations. Talks between Sony and Disney started on Aug. 20 and ended Sept. 27.
The original deal was a five-picture movie deal, with Sony making a majority of the money and Disney only getting five percent of the opening day money and merchandising revenue. Sony pulled the plug on Aug 20. because Disney wanted to split the money 50/50, while Sony wanted to stay on the original deal.
The new deal was announced on Sept. 27, stating that both Disney and Marvel will receive 25 percent of the profits as well as Disney retaining merchandise rights, creative control, and putting up a quarter of the financing for the next film. The next film to release since the new movie is the third installment of the MCU Spider-man, which is slated for a July 16, 2021, release date.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Spider-man actor Tom Holland helped bring back the franchise to the MCU. The 23-year-old actor made multiple appeals to Disney chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Iger and Sony’s film chairman Tom Rothman to reach a resolution.
Holland expressed his excitement of Spider-man being back in the MCU with a clip of Leonardo DiCaprio’s speech from the Wolf of Wall Street.“I’m not leaving…I’m not leaving…I’m not f@#$&^% leaving…The show goes on. This is my home, they’re gonna need a f@#$%!^ wrecking ball to take me out of here… They’re gonna need to send in the National Guard or the f!@#$%^ SWAT team cause I ain’t going nowhere,” said the clip Holland posted to his social media outlets.
Another reason for Sony and Disney coming to a new deal was the backlash from the fans. Fans took to social media with #BringBackSpiderMan and signed multiple petitions. Fans, however, can now rest assured because everyone’s favorite wall-crawler is back in the MCU. The next standalone Spider-Man movie is set for release on July 16, 2021.
