Top 10 movies releasing this year
2020 is officially in the past and now we have a new year to look forward to and hopefully this year can make up for the unfortunate events that took place last year. But with a new year comes new things to look forward to and one of those things are new movies! Here is a look at the top 10 movies to come out in 2021.
- Space Jam: A New Legacy
Scheduled to be released on July 16th, the Space Jam that originally came out in 1996 which featured NBA superstar and now hall of famer Michael Jordan and the cast of Looney Tunes is getting a sequel featuring current NBA superstar, Lebron James and the Looney Tunes cast is set to return once again. The movie is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and is supposed to have other NBA stars in the cast such as Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Damian Lillard with other special appearances.
- Halloween Kills
The twelfth movie of the Halloween franchise is scheduled to release on October 15th and is set to start right after the last movie, Halloween which came out in 2018. The premise of the movie is that Michael Myers is loose yet again and is being hunted by a mob formed by the main character, Laurie Strode. Halloween Kills is directed by David Jordan Green and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Anthony Michael Hall
- The French Dispatch
Directed by Wes Anderson, the director of Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs, and the Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch is Anderson’s first live action film since 2014 (Grand Budapest Hotel). The movie is based around the making of a fictional newspaper in France called “The French Dispatch”. The movie also has a huge cast that includes Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Frances McDormand, Timothee Chalamet, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson and is scheduled to release in May
- Candyman
The sequel to the first Candyman film released in 1992 is set to release on August 27th and tells the story of a killer with a hook as a hand and appears whenever you say his name in a mirror five times in a Chicago neighborhood. The movie is directed by Nia DaCosta and the screenplay is by Jordan Peele, director of Get Out and Us.
- Top Gun: Maverick
Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, and Miles Teller, Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to be released on July 2nd and is a direct sequel from the 1986 film–Top Gun–and continues to follow the main character, a top aviator from the Navy
- No Time to Die
The 25th film in the James Bond franchise and the 5th movie starring Daniel Craig is coming out in theaters on April 2nd. The premise of the movie is based around a scientist that gets abducted, James Bond makes it his mission to retrieve him while of course running into enemies while doing so. No Time to Die is directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and stars Daniel Craig, Rami Malek, Naomie Harris, and Christoph Waltz.
- Eternals
Another MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) movie is scheduled to be released this year on November 5th and follows the “Eternals” a group of humanoids with special powers who have been called to protect the Earth from the “Deviants”. The movie is directed by Chloe Zhao and stars Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail NanJiani, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harington.
- A Quiet Place Part II
The sequel to A Quiet Place (2018) is set to take place right after the events in the first movie. The film is based around a mom and her two children that fight to survive the horrifying creatures that hunt them by using their hearing. The movie is directed by John Krasinski and stars Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe.
- Black Widow
Black Widow is the first MCU movie to be released since Avengers: End Game (2019) and is set around the superhero of the same name Black Widow. The events in the movie take place after Captain America: Civil War but the premise of the movie is about the Black Widow’s past and origin. The movie is scheduled to release on May 7th and is directed by Cate Shortland and stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour.
- Dune
Based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, Dune is a sci-fi dystopian film based on the desert planet of Arrakis where a family called the Atreides has accepted to take stewardship but ends up dealing with the enemies, the Harkonnens as they fight for a spice that enables you to live longer while also dealing with giant sandworms that has inhabited the dunes. The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve who has directed multiple award-nominated movies such as Prisoners, Sicario, and Enemy. Dune also has a star-studded cast that has made this film such an exciting movie, it stars Timothee Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Jason Mamoa, Javier Bardem and Rebecca Ferguson.
