Battle Literature and Art Magazine or BLARM is a student-run and curated magazine featuring student art, sculptures, and writing. Their goal is to show off the talent and potential of students.
Jody Spriggs, art teacher and supervisor of BLARM said, “I believe BLARM is not just important, but necessary for Battle because it allows students to have a great creative outlet that gets published, which is an amazing experience.”
All forms of art are accepted: drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, short stories, and poems, as long as they fit within the theme and is school-appropriate.
This year’s theme is Rooted, and it has been left vague on purpose, so it could be interpreted however the artist wants or feels it would best fit.
“I felt like last year’s theme Celestial wasn’t the best it could’ve been, it kind of pigeonholed people to have them make stuff that was space-oriented,” said Axle Butriks, one of BLARM’s student leaders.
BLARM has a history of great submissions and showcases of student talent. Former member of BLARM, Leslie Ramirez, was listed in the 2016 edition of the COMO Magazine “Twenty Under Twenty” segment for high school students with promising futures from Columbia for the work she did for BLARM. BLARM is planning to continue to show off the talents of students for the rest of Battles’ existence with support from the student body and the faculty.
“I feel like the people submitting put in so much effort along with the people working in BLARM,” said Butricks, “I feel like BLARM is really important to Battle because it shows that there are people with legitimate talent, and they get to shine with BLARM.”
To submit to BLARM, students can do so through the daily Spartan Mail, or through any of the QR codes on the posters around the school. The deadline to submit is January 7, and all students are encouraged to take part and share their talents.
