Looking to aid fellow students in need, Junior Hailey Mendez Roca, has coordinated a way for people to access necessities for this winter. Mendez Roca created a winter clothing drive as a project at the beginning of the year for her investigations in Advanced Seminars class in hopes of helping students going through poverty and homelessness. She is in contact with several organizations such as LOVE Columbia and Powerhouse Ministries, but the project is solely run by her.
Social media helps spread awareness of the drive’s existence by spreading it across platforms like reposts on instagram.
The clothing drive is located on the lower G hallway here at Battle High. There, you will find clothing items like coats, hoodies, hats, and many other clothing items that are crucial for staying warm this upcoming winter. According to Mendez Roca, this clothing drive will last up until the end of winter, but she is planning on holding a drive that will last the entire school year.
Being vice president of Youth Kindness Ambassadors, Mendez Roca hopes to do more to help Battle and its students in the future. “It makes me feel good inside, it’s something I have a big passion for.” she said. Her personal goal is to reach 200 donations before winter ends.
She hopes to create positive changes in her community. At the moment, the clothing drive has around 30 donations from students that attend Battle and incoming donations from Powerhouse Ministries. “Spreading positivity throughout the community is such an easy and rewarding thing to do and I don’t ever see myself stopping.”
