The StuCo meeting on February 27th talked about the MASC Conference, the polar plunge fundraiser, and the SOMO volleyball event.
StuCo to Attend MASC Conference
The Student Council or StuCo went to the Missouri Association of Student Councils or MASC on March 14-16. While they were there, they had Moana-themed discussion boards and discussed how our StuCo is run and compared it with other StuCos in Missouri. “The goal of Student Council and MASC is to find fun and creative ways to get scholars involved in their school and their community. In my opinion, the goal of BHS StuCo is to try and expand our community here at Battle, whether that’s through spirit weeks, volleyball tournaments, or food days; whatever it is we try really hard to build the school spirit and community at BHS,” said Taylor Heath Student Council President
Polar Plunge
Some StuCo members participated in the Polar Plunge on March 9. The polar plunge is occurring to raise money for the Special Olympics of Missouri or SOMO. SOMO is a year-round training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Thousands participate in 16 Olympic-type sports throughout the state. The registration fee for the event was $10, and every member who participated had to raise $65 plus the $10 registration fee. The Polar Plunge is an event where participants are walking, running, or crawling into Bass Pro Shops Lake. Sophomore Maura Beahan StuCo Vice President said “ I really enjoyed getting to help pick out costumes for the plunge. We ended up looking so funny. Attending the Polar Plunge will now be something that our Student Council participates in every year, and our costumes will get better and better,” about doing The Polar Plunge. MASC has been a supporter of SOMO for the past 31 years and ever since 2009 has promoted the Polar Plunge MASC member schools have raised over $1,300,000 for SOMO since 2009 according to MASC.
SOMO Volleyball Fundraiser
StuCo also held the second SOMO charity volleyball tournament on March 1. Five teams and a total of 37 people attended with each participant paying a fee of $5 to attend, raising $185 for SOMO. The members of the winning team going by the Yetis were Savannah Cooper, Sarah Moore, Jace Cooper, Brayden Groseclose, Chris Glay, Tyler Putnam, Jack Putnam, and Tate McCubbin beat the runners-up up the Cast Iron Pans.
