Battle Football opened up its 2024 season at North Kansas City High School with Coach Matthew Herman’s second year as Head Coach. North Kansas City struck first with a touchdown in the first quarter. But Battle responded quickly with a 64-yard touchdown run by senior Chris Brown.
The Battle defense held North Kansas City’s offense to 7 points in the first half. North Kansas City started off the 2nd half strong scoring 14 points in the 3rd quarter and 13 points in the 4th quarter. Battle scored one more time in the 4th quarter with a pass from freshman quarterback Blayne Jungmann to sophomore wide receiver Isaiah Grant for a 42-yard touchdown. That touchdown was not enough to overcome North Kansas City’s 34 points. Battle lost 34-14.
Battle’s week two opponent was Capital City, who managed an 8-4 record in the 2023-2024 season. Capital City started their 2024-2025 season with a 45-7 win versus Carl Junction. Battle played Capital City on September 9. Capital City started the scoring off first with an 18-yard touchdown and an extra point on their first offensive drive to make the score 7-0.
However, on Battle’s first offensive drive, junior Kendle Wilkerson aired out a deep ball to junior Jace Cooper for a 78-yard touchdown. Battle tried to take the lead with a 2-point conversion but failed, so Capital City still led Battle 7-6. Capital City got the ball back after the touchdown but fumbled on the Battle 28-yard line and senior Chris Brown ran it back 72 yards for the touchdown and a 12-7 Battle lead. After the Battle touchdown, Capital City scored 28 points unanswered until the 4th quarter when Battle scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown from senior Chris Brown. Battle attempted a 2-point conversion but failed, scoring 35-18 Capital City.
Capital City scored a touchdown in the final seconds of the game making the final score 42-18. Capital City upgrades their record to 2-0 and Battle downgrades their record to 0-2.
