The news is out, and Battle’s first musical production is in the works. Battle’s Vocal Arts Committee announced on August 23 that they will be showcasing the musical Freaky Friday, with music and lyrics written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. This adaptation is based on the novel “Freaky Friday” by Mary Rodgers written in 1972. The play is structured around an uptight mother and rebellious daughter’s rocky relationship with each other who don’t see eye to eye on everything.
Auditions for Battle’s first musical “Freaky Friday” began on Monday, September 9, and ran through Tuesday, September 10. The musical features two main leading roles, mother and daughter Katherine and Ellie Blake. Senior Talia Saxton auditioned for the role of Katherine Blake, and although being nervous, Saxton secured one of only two lead roles. Saxton said, “I prepared for the role by watching every version of the show every day leading up to the audition to make sure I knew the part like the back of my hand.”
Preparation began before the auditions for these auditionees. The actors would have to pick a monologue piece along with a song that would fit the character for their auditions.
The musical is set to open on Friday, November 22, 2024, and will run through Sunday, November 24. All these shows will take place in Battle’s Performing Arts Center.
