While the BHS girls tennis team at the time of writing has yet to win a match this season, the team has grown from five members to nine with only three returning players. This allowed the team to meet the minimum requirement to compete at the varsity level according to MSHSAA. When discussing the team’s remaining season and its future, co-captain Breleigh Moore said; “Have enough people on the team for a full varsity and JV as well as a win game and get a match win on Senior night against CIS.”
Despite the team’s recent growth, their future is in question as both coaches will be leaving because of post-college graduation plans. If the team doesn’t find a coach by the start of next season the team will be disbanded and all players will be unable to play at the high school level going forward.
The team is currently coached by two volunteer Mizzou students Samantha Nash and Abby Piontek, who learned about the program from a friend. “One of my sorority sisters used to play here and was really good, and I’ve played tennis since kindergarten and played competitively in high school so I wanted to share my love of tennis,” said assistant coach Piontek.
Head coach Nash said, “I’m really proud of them, I think the girls are putting in a lot of work and I’m happy to see their growth as well as the team’s.”
The team has struggled to win this season, only winning a single JV game. Senior and first-year member Kamryn Greer won the game 6-4. “It was my first game ever so I was happy to win. I celebrated all night after and got ice cream.”
