There’s a new robotics club at Battle High School with great opportunities for students to get involved. The club had its first meeting this past Thursday; however, the team is new, and the numbers were small. “I think it’s a great opportunity for students to learn engineering and build fun things,” said the club’s sponsor, Mr. Schilling.
“Students interested in technology, engineering, and coding will definitely learn practical skills in those areas. They will also learn the value of teamwork and cooperation as they compete in a sport-like environment.”
While in the robotics club students will build a robot to use to participate in a national competition against other robotics teams in and out of town. Each year there is a new challenge and rules set in place which teams use to create their robot. The club will participate in several competitions throughout the year with the expectation that the robot will get better getting closer to the large competition. Schilling said that the hope is “to have a working robot by November or December.”
The club is competing in the First Tech Challenge. First Tech is a California-based challenge where teams of middle school and high school students are to design, build, and program a robot to compete against other team’s creations. Their vision is to “Transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”
The club has no set dates as of now for future competitions, but there will be several events throughout the year.
