The Battle Cheer Team completed a fundraiser in January, selling Domino’s Slice the Price cards, that started on January 5 and ended on January 19. This fundraiser was for the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams to compete on the day of the “Game Day State” competition which takes place on February 14.
Battle Cheer partnered with Domino’s to sell Slice the Price cards. The card has a code that allows purchasers to buy one large pizza and get another for free. This can be used to buy multiple pizzas and get a free pizza for every pizza purchased. The coupon is $20, half of that goes towards the cheer team; the other half goes towards Domino’s.
“We’re going to Springfield, Missouri. We’re competing in what’s called the “Game Day State” competition. We are actually bringing our JV and our varsity, and it’s the first time our JV has competed. The whole team, which is about 30 kids total, is going to spend the night down at the hotel in Springfield,” said Sarah Tornez, head cheerleader and stunt coach.
To prepare for the competition, the cheer team choreographed their routines for the past two months. The routine involves three parts—a band chant, where they perform a dance, using props like signs and flags to represent the school, a cheer, where they cheer while incorporating the use of stunts and props, and then combine all elements of stunting, tumbling, and dancing, to the Battle Fight Song.
“It was kinda hard as not a lot of people like Domino’s but, we overcame it by asking teachers and people we know who have kids and they use it for birthdays or people with big families, ” varsity cheer member Brooklynn Lewis, junior, said.
The team has worked many hours to get the formations and movements right on the floor. They also perform parts of their routine at halftime shows for basketball games and at the upcoming Courtwarming assembly.
“I think that our teams will do well at their Game Day competition! Our JV is competing for the first time, and the team is very talented and hardworking. I think that they have a possibility to really place well. The Varsity team has also had a lot of success in competition this year–they placed 2nd at Regionals, 3rd at State and 5th at the CMAC Championship. We are hoping to be in the top 5 at Game Day State as well!” Ms. Tornez said.
