MLB Opening Day was on March 25, and both Missouri teams got their shot at recording their first win of the season. Only one team was successful: the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards scored 9-7 utilizing their young talent, and the Kansas City Royals took their first loss of the season 6-0 to the Atlanta Braves because they were simply outplayed by the Braves’ early offense.
The MLB is full of new talent this year making it difficult to choose which team is the best in the league. Even narrowing it down into Missouri, there is a toss up between who will be the better Missouri team with the better season. Between fielding and batting, there are so many different opinions formed from one question: who is the best? The Royals have some young and old talent: Bobby Witt Jr, Salvador Perez, Jac Caglianone, and Maikel Garcia. The Cardinals also have a mix of old and new talent with players Masyn Winn, Brendon Donovan, JJ Wetherspoon, and Victor Scott II.
Although the Cardinals won their Opening Day game, the Royals still have a healthy amount of talent to reward themselves with a winning record in the future while maybe the Cardinals start their season better but eventually end with a worse record.
Dalton Roberts, junior first baseman, said, “I think the Royals are better because they have more talent, and the Cardinals are rebuilding right now.”
Finn Wilson, sophomore, agreed, “I think the Royals are better because they won the 2015 World Series.”
The Royals have won a World Series more recently than the Cardinals who last won in 2011. One of the Royals’ star players, Salvador Parez, is still a hard-playing veteran.
Another way to judge who is the better team is when the Cardinals face the Royals on May 15, at Kauffman Stadium for the first game of the series.
With all things considered, what team do Battle students think will have a better season?
