Scream 7 was released on February 27, and this movie gets a C+ because they removed some of the best actors, and the killers were very unpredictable and the way the whole movie was set was like a failed continuation. The plot was rushed unlike the other movies, likely due to the highly publicized production shifts following the exits of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. They have Neve Campbell back as Sidney. She’s literally the GOAT of final girls (the surviving character), and seeing her play a protective mom was actually pretty cool. Isabel May, who plays her daughter Tatum, was also really good; she felt like a real person and not just some random victim.
But let’s talk about the actual “scary” parts. The kills were brutal. There’s this one scene with a bear tap that I’m probably never going to forget. The best kill scene was when Madison and her boyfriend, Scott, are attacked at a “themed Airbnb” that replicates the original Stu Macher house. As she falls, Ghostface holds up a hunting knife, causing her to be impaled through the stomach upon landing. While still alive after being impaled, she is then burned alive when the killer douses the area in gasoline and lights a match.
Since Kevin Williamson directed this one, it feels more like old school 90s movies. There are tons of callbacks to the original storyline, and even Gale Weathers (played by Courteney Cox) gets some solid screen time. With Sam and Tara gone, the new group of teenagers who are Tatum’s friends don’t really have much personality. They mostly just feel like future victims (and spoiler alert: they are).
The movie also tries to be old school by including physical effects, The physical effects added clean details. The killer reveal is super weird because instead of having just one killer, there’s three of them running around. I think it’s the worst movie in the whole franchise because the motive is a bit weak compared to the others.
This movie was not better than any of the others in the Scream franchise. The storyline generally stays the same, but with the switch-up of the actors the movie does not meet the standards like it used to. I would recommend seeing this movie if you are interested in gore or very bloody horror movies.
