Gas prices in the United States have been increasing by more and more every day since April 7 as a result of the war in Iran. This, of course, affects students who drive to school as prices reach numbers as high as over four dollars per gallon. The construction on the interstate and on East St. Charles has caused students and teachers to find new routes to the building. With gas prices going up, the new routes to school mean students and teachers are paying more to get to school.
“I have to drive two hours, an hour there and an hour back,” Mrs. Mindi Coslet, assistant principal said. “Per week it usually costs about 400 dollars total”.
On average, cars hold about 12 to 24 gallons in a single tank of gas. According to the Columbia Missourian, during February, it would have cost an average of about 36 dollars to fuel up for a normal SUV or sedan, if the tank was down to a quarter full. In April, the cost to fill up the same amount of gas is 49 dollars, costing 13 more dollars.
“Yeah it was like 70 dollars to fill up my truck the other day.” Sophomore Anthony Draper said. “And it was from a quarter tank too.” Draper said.
“It’s getting crazy, why did I have to pay more than 60 dollars to fill up my car.” Sophomore Marco Robles-Martinez said.
The last time Missouri saw these prices was when Russia invaded Ukraine. Then, prices at the start of the Russia-Ukraine war were only 13 cents off from five dollars a gallon, according to Greg Iacurci with CNBC.
