The Weeknd Artist Review

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, or “The Weeknd’, is known as an alternative R&B artist. Those that know The Weeknd acknowledge that his status as a successful musician exploded in the past few years. He is known for the No.1 releases Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy, and My Dear Melancholy. Abel Tesfaye has had many accomplishments including being the first artist to hold the top three spots on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs.

Tesfaye began his career posting his first few songs (“What You Need”, “The Morning”, and “Loft Music”) to Youtube. The songs were included in a blog post by Drake, who later attended one of Tesfaye’s shows and suggested collaborating with the upcoming artist. The two worked together, allowing The Weeknd to perform as opening acts for Drake, and later working on Drake’s 2011 album, Take Care.

The Weeknd released three mixtapes: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence. The three mixtapes together were known as the Balloons Trilogy, although not officially released as a compilation until later. The three mixtapes drew attention to The Weeknd and attracted attention from several record labels.

In 2012, The Weeknd toured much of the United States and parts of Europe in places such as Coachella in the U.S. and the Primavera Sounds Festival in Spain and Portugal. Following his tours, he signed with the Republic Records, and shortly after the Balloons Trilogy, was officially released under the name Trilogy. The compilation charted at number 4 on the Billboard 200.

Ever since, every album release by The Weeknd has received certifications and praises. The albums released by The Weeknd include Kiss Land (2013), Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), and Starboy (2016). Both Beauty Behind the Madness and Staryboy, went triple Platinum in the US. The Weeknd, also released an Extended Play (EP) tilted My Dear Melancholy (2018) which topped number one on the Billboard 200.

The last release of music by The Weeknd was a song titled “Lost in the Fire” which was part of an album titled Hyperion (2019) released by Gesaffelstein. The last substantial amount of music released by The Weeknd consisted of the six song EP My Dear Melancholy and was released over a year ago.

With few music releases over the past few years, fans are growing restless and desire new music. In early November of 2018, The Weeknd made the statement while at a show in Toronto, “I wanna let you guys know, being in Toronto these past two days… I haven’t been this inspired in years, I got to tell you, Chapter 6 coming soon, let’s get it!”. This statement could be a hint towards his new upcoming album that might come out later this year in 2019.
